Did you miss the Soapbox Derby a few years back when Fremont Avenue became a racing strip for “both experienced racers and amateurs alike” to sail down the hill in their “outrageous, human-powered soapbox dream machines”? If so, HAVE NO FEAR. The event has made a triumphant return to Seattle! Only this time, the racing will happen downtown on Yesler Way.
This Sunday, August 24th at 1 p.m. is when all the FREE action begins. Each team is competing to win in three categories: “speed, creativity and showmanship. This criteria has inspired a piano, a baby carriage, a rodeo clown, a massive cob of corn, a jail cell and even the Golden Gate Bridge to grace the Soapbox starting blocks. Since the first Red Bull Soapbox Race took place in Belgium, in 2000, more than 40 Red Bull Soapbox Races have been held around the globe, attracting up to 120,000 spectators for a single event.”
If you arrive early at 11 a.m., the pit area will be open for you to get up close and personal with the vehicles and drivers. You even have an opportunity to vote for a fan favorite! As it is free and quite unique, there will be definitely be lots of people so take public transit and be prepared for the energy that comes with a crowd of cheering fans!
